Parking has a substantial impact on traffic, the transportation experience, and city planning. In urban areas, studies have shown that roughly 30% of cars in traffic are drivers searching for parking. Outside of the impact on traffic as a whole, "U.S. drivers spend 17 hours per year searching for parking at a cost of $345 per driver in wasted time, fuel and emissions", and in larger cities, it is often much worse.

Solving these problems is difficult and measuring the impact of initiatives geared towards solving them is also not easy.

Automotus has recently launched parking focused video-analysis software that helps solve these problems for both drivers and city administrators. Live parking guidancehelps drivers find available spots in real-time, reducing traffic caused by searching for parking. Assisted-enforcement alerts parking officers of violations, increasing efficiency and revenue, while also incentivizing spot turnover. Automated pay-by-platelets drivers skip the meter and automatically pay every time they park by simply linking their license plate to their payment information online. Parking and traffic analyticsprovides administrators with relevant data that represent trends and patterns in their traffic ecosystem to help them better understand how to best allocate their resources and adjust policies.

Automotus video-analysis AI runs on cameras overlooking street parking and entry/exit points of garages to monitor traffic and parking. Communities with existing cameras can leverage them for much more than their current use and add Automotus or third-party cameras where needed.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Drivers will be able to leverage dynamic signs, ParkMobile, and ParkMe to find available parking in real-time, reducing driver frustration and traffic caused by drivers searching for parking. Drivers will also be able to register their license plate number on the Automotus automated payment platform to enable autopay, which lets drivers to skip the meter, automatically paying for parking when their vehicle pulls into an Automotus-monitored spot.

Parking administrators will use analytics to better understand traffic and driver demand for parking, which will enable proactive setting of policies and pricing to meet the needs of the community and properly incentivize efficient spot turnover. Parking administrators will also be able to enforce parking with increased efficiency using camera-assisted enforcement that detects violations as they occur.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Pilot - you have implemented your solution in a real-world scenario
  • Ready to Scale - you have completed and expanded your pilot and are seeing adoption of your solution by your intended user

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

Automotus was founded in 2017 by two first-time entrepreneurs who were fed up with Los Angeles traffic and wanted to do something about it. The company quickly expanded, adding experienced team members and insightful advisors from the fields of traffic & parking and video-analysis AI. Notable advisors include Donald Shoup, UCLA Urban Planning Professor whose work primarily focuses on the intersection of parking and traffic, and Glenn Derry, video analysis software pioneer.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

In a pilot with Pittsburgh we would integrate our GPU-based NVR solution with any existing NVR to leverage cameras already in use and use the remaining funds to install Automotus cameras (costing $3k each) in areas not yet covered.

Using a subscription model for our software suite that can be bundled based on services (parking guidance, analytics, enforcement, and automated payment), we will charge Pittsburgh accordingly. Subscription pricing fluctuates depending on services and cellular data usage. As Pittsburgh seeks to add more cameras, we would either provide them (sale or lease) or integrate with third party systems. Beyond Pittsburgh, we use the same model of SaaS for the software suite and if we're providing cameras, we sell or lease them.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Success would be measured by a range of different data points, including driver and administrator satisfaction. The impacts we would expect to see are increases in parking occupancy rates, spot turnover rates, and enforcement revenue. Accordingly, we would measure those data points, which would directly translate to more efficient use of parking.

Additionally, a more granular data point that our technology can measure is the counting of vehicles that pass by a vacant spot or a structure with available parking. This data point determines the percentage of drivers searching for parking, which represents unmet demand when occupancy is high. Parking administrators can use this metric and others to adjust policies and pricing to incentivize and disincentivize drivers accordingly. With that in mind, we'll view our pilot as successful if Pittsburgh achieves qualitative progress in their mission to provide convenient transportation to their citizens.
