Active Art Allegheny will develop a public art campaign that will encourage residents in a piloted community (to be identified) to use active transportation modes like biking and public transit. This project is inspired by Austin’s creative crosswalks and St. Louis’s traffic safety messaging programs.
By creating artistic, educational, and welcoming transit routes throughout Pittsburgh, we hope to positively impact residents’ perception of the city’s transportation system. Specific messaging will improve transparency and utilization and increase community participation and pride by including artwork by local artists. This project offers potential to revitalize buses and bus stops to feature public transit information that is transparent, culturally appropriate, inclusive, and fun. Sidewalk artwork, will have messages such as “Look up, cross safely” and “There’s a trail nearby, check it out!”
By utilizing art to disseminate information like public service announcements describing how to use public transportation, and ways to use biking and/or walking to get where they need to go, transportation information will be more accessible and intriguing.
