Buying a phone mount for my bike was one of the most transformative transportation moments in my life. All of a sudden I could navigate hands-free with ease and be guided to my end destination by safe routes. Before this, navigating by bike involved trying to remember as much as the route as possible before leaving, but then without fail, having to pull over to the side of roads multiple times to check where I'm going or worse, look at my phone with one hand while steering with the other. This hassle means sometimes I would take the driving route that I knew, but that wasn't the safest option or generally just feeling frustrated and lost.
Currently there is no option on Healthy Ride bikes to transport your phone safely. If you've used Healthy Ride before, you know the baskets are incapable of holding a cellphone, so to navigate by phone you have to keep it in your pockets, purse, waistline of pants, or bra. This often results in one handed steering as you fish your phone out with your other hand and try to figure out directions. It is cumbersome, frustrating, and unsafe.
My solution is quite simple. After testing a few different kind of phone mount models with Healthy Ride, we would buy the mounts in bulk and securely install them. There are universal phone mounts available that require no hardware for the user and fit a variety of different phone sizes.
I believe with phone mounts, cyclists will become immensely more confident, happy, and safe on roadways as apps will navigate them hands-free to safer routes. It opens up a world of possibilities for Healthy Ride users as now they wouldn't be limited by their knowledge of routes and it becomes a much more attractive transportation alternative. Due to my own personal experience with phone mounts on bikes, I also believe that once the public has used a bike with a phone mount, those who own bikes will see the benefits, purchase their own phone mount, and it could increase biking of the general public, beyond Healthy Ride users. It's a simple, effective, low-cost solution to helping cyclists better navigate through the city safely and with less friction.
