Dedicated Lanes for Self Driving Vehicles

Build dedicated lanes for self driving vehicles to get riders from transit-starved areas to the stops for the bus best for them.

We need to get more people out of cars and into public transit.  The self driving car gets riders from transit-starved areas (e.g., suburbs) to the transit routes they need. Self driving cars, at present, need to be in dedicated lanes.  This proposal increases transit access and improves transit safety.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Anyone who is outside of the PAT system could use this solution. E.G., Moon Township has, for practical purposes, no access to public transit. My proposal would benefit them as well as many others.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

I have discussed this idea with my colleagues attending the City of Tomorrow meetings; but, I do not have an organized team.

Size of your team or organization

  • I am submitting as an individual

Funding Request

  • $100,000

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

We would need a viable self driving vehicle first. Then cooperation from the local municipalities (e.g, Moon Township, Coraopolis and others to create a dedicated lane to the PAT transit stops at Thorn Run at 5th Ave as well as others.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Local residents, a number of whom could be using Senior Citizen Passes, but don't would provide feedback to their local municipalities via surveys.

Hello Michael, thank you for the submission, I am a facilitator for the challenge. I think it would be valuable for your proposal if you explained the function of the dedicated lane for this service more, and I am also wondering, could you pilot this project without a self driving car?

Mr. Mutahr,
Thank you for your interest. One of the concepts discussed at our City of Tomorrow gatherings is that self driving cars should be in their own dedicated lanes in the interest of their being accepted by the public as safe. The concept of a self driving car being used as a shuttle to transit stops is viable even now if the roads it will be on are limited and well -marked to human drivers. Ultimately, vehicles driven by human drivers could very likely be replaced by self driving cars, so the concept of dedicated lanes could be viewed as justified only in certain cases.
