iomob is building an open mobility protocol leveraging blockchain technology. In Pittsburgh we would like to pilot our solution which enables the creation of an open collaborative mobility marketplace combining public and private, established and startup, services.  Once implemented iomob will enable seamless access to discover, receive multimodal routing options, book and pay for any mobility service in the city.  Iomob will offer a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) pay as you go or monthly service solution for residents and visitors.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Mobility service providers (MSPs) who are interested in collaborating and competing in an open marketplace and to support solving first mile/last mile vie interconnectivity with public transit services will be key users of the Pittsburgh iomob solution. Furthermore residents and visitors will benefit from access to a seamless user experience through our own iomob app which enables discovery, routing, booking (and sign up for new services) and payment through a single app as opposed to the current fragmented marketplace.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Prototype - you have built a prototype and tested it with potential users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

Our founding team consists of 3 PhDs, including Boyd Cohen, a global smart cities expert (originally from the US) and 2 PhDs in computer science. In total iomob currently has 10 employees. We also have a strong advisory team including Susan Shaheen, the leading authority on shared mobility from UC Berkeley. Our website with more info is iomob.net and our CEO's website is: boydcohen.impress.ly

Size of your team or organization

  • 2-10

Funding Request

  • $100,000

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

iomob is in the alpha stage of much of the technology required to implement the solution described above. The funding would contribute to advancing our prototype and adopting it to Pittsburgh's local conditions and incorporating appropriate APIs from public transit and private mobility service providers.

Furthermore, iomob recently received investment from Centrality, an Asian Pacific blockchain venture studio and formed a joint venture with them called Senta Mobility which aims to build what we refer to as an open Mobility as a Service (oMaaS) solution.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

iomob would be keen to explore the utilization of public transit for subscribers pre and post pilot implementation. The growth in users and MSPs who join the pilot over time would be important to track as would be the satisfaction with the overall mobility experience in Pittsburgh would be critical as well. The proposed solution will generate rich aggregate data about mobility patterns in the city which could also be used to inform new investment in public transit and inspire new business opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Hi Akasha,

I encourage you to have people discuss the idea through the comments here instead of the chat room to help promote community dialogue on this proposal, at least during the Refine phase. This can help you to further develop the idea and have people provide their own experiences to make this a proposal that is really customized to the needs of people in Pittsburgh.

Thank you for the opportunity. We would be excited to have an opportunity to collaborate on such a project supported by the Pittsburgh, Ford and IDEO. All three are world-class partners and it would be an honor. We will keep our fingers crossed.
