Similar to the idea of utilizing the trains (Justin Kelley), one could take those same routes and pave them, and make them dedicated routes for autonomous vehicles, both for delivery and for transit purposes. The benefit would be that these vehicles could join the normal traffic patterns for pick-up, and for delivery, and the routes would be merely to separate the autonomous traffic from pedestrians and other vehicles. It would certainly speed adoption and minimize risk. The vehicles themselves could be multiple configurations, from large semi-trucks and busses, to small individual order/passenger vehicles.
