Buses in Miami Dade are only provided for students further than 2 miles away from the school.  So there are a large number of students near the schools that are being dropped off by parents.  This has the negative impacts of congestion on the roadways, as well as increasing obesity and diabetes for students.

Work with interested local schools and PTAs and potential instructors to help develop Walking School Bus programs.  This could be paired with schools that are utilizing the WALKSAFE program to reinforce education about walking safety.

The great part of the Walking School Bus is they are simple in nature and could have significant results.

There is a guide available online.

Invite families who live nearby to walk their kids to school.

Pick a route and take a test walk.

Decide how often the group will walk.  Have fun.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

A program could be replicated for Miami-Dade that would work with schools and PTAs to help develop local walking school buses. A group of families could coordinate to walk kids to school. Kids would have a chance to get some activity in the morning and help prepare them for the day.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

This idea exists throughout the US and is supported by the National Safe Routes to School as well as the USDOT. While I'm submitting this idea as an individual, if further opportunity is available to develop this, I would reach out to the WALKSAFE program as well as the Miami Dade Schools Community Traffic Safety Team.

Size of your team or organization

  • I am submitting as an individual

Funding Request

  • $100,000

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Initial funds would be used to hire a staff at a non-profit to coordinate programs with schools and help develop the program. Additional grant funds would be sought through health-oriented grantors or safe-route-to-school funds. While the intent is not to make money, but identifying where savings are generated through improved health and reduced congestion should be noted. These programs at a school level should not require regular funding and could be raised locally.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

The WALKSAFE program through the schools take surveys throughout the year of how students get to school. Seeing the number of students walking increase at schools that encourage a walking school bus would be a success. Seeing any reduction in congestion of parents dropping off students would also be a measure of success.

Hello Collin Worth ! Thanks for sharing some great inspiration! My name is Matteo C and I'm one of the facilitators here.
Just wanted to ask you how do you plan on using the 100k and how do you plan to sustain this initiative?
Thanks for sharing again.
