Immediately Reduce Traffic

Innovative idea to reduce traffic congestion and toxic traffic pollution.

Hundreds of thousands of moms or dads drive kids to school every morning,  then pick them up, causing severe traffic congestion and traffic pollution during rush hours. After the school shootings, and high crime in Miami, parents are scared and feel a sense of security when driving kids to school. In order to make it fun for kids and stay-at-home parents to want to use school buses, this entails refurbishing old buses into double-decker, candy red, e-buses (or anything other than polluting diesel), that will also take parents along. Refurbishing can be done by using current buses' scrap metal. The much larger e-school buses that now fit double the capacity will carry advertisements for (hopefully, but not limited to) green jobs and businesses (solar, wind, organic landscaping, etc). In these FREE rides (hopefully, b/c ads will pay for all expenses), of tall buses, parents can ride with their children to school and be taken home afterwards. There could be a person next to the bus driver educating kids on fun things. Parents will be also picked up by bus b/fore school is over, and driven to school to pick up kids. Afterwards, kids and parents are dropped off at home. This will form bonds b/tween the parents (a sort  of daily social gathering), which in turn, builds better communities and neighbors.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Every single elementary school child w/ one parent or guardian, five days a week, to and from school to severely diminish rush hour traffic.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

My team: the little people working inside my brain. :)

Size of your team or organization

  • I am submitting as an individual

Funding Request

  • $25,000

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

The only money needed is to remodel buses and transform them into double-decker, wide (2-lane) ebuses. I'm unsure how much money is needed to transform them to test for pilot program.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

We'd need to measure the amount of people willing to be part of this project on a daily basis, and measure the amount of traffic it removed due to the project.

Mayra, Hi and thanks for this post! I have not read much about school busses in the explore phase. I have questions, I hope they are not silly questions, but I do not live in Miami. So, are school busses in operation now, or a thing of the past? Why did they fall out of favor and why do parents / kids not like to use them? on a different tack, are you thinking to go to the Workshop in Miami on the 18th? See calendar linked above. This could help you with design thinking. Pop back and edit your post with any info you are researching currently. Katie, Facilitator

Hi Katie. Yes, Miami Dade has school buses in operation for 60,000 kids only. The rest (close to half a million) get driven to school by a parent. Imagine the nightmare traffic during rush hours this creates? It seems that after many school shootings, corruption and criminals in MIami Dade, parents are scared and feel a sense of securing when taking their kids to school, and picking them up to drive them home. This is the reason I strongly believe we must include the parent driver and why the buses need to be much larger (double-decker). I'd like to attend the workshop but unsure if I will be able to. Thank you.

Hi Mayra Lazara ,

We missed you at the Community Workshop event this past Thursday. I’m Wilda, one of the community facilitators here. Have you given some more thought to this idea? I think it’s a great one!

Heres a question: How would the entire county of Miami-Dade participate? Would the program pilot in certain school districts at first?

We’ll be be here for a few weeks, getting to know each other. You night even bump into me at the NEXT community workshop ;) Don’t forget to upload a picture of yourself! :)

Hi Mayra, check our company out Zing Rides. We are working hard daily to solve this issue and we always like to collaborate with like minded entrepreneurs.

I love this outside the box -idea! I can see how it can work to eliminate traffic congestion. I don't think anyone ever thought of widening the school busses to fit more kids and take the parents along too, who instead would be driving them to school causing part of traffic congestion.
