Using electronic license plate to form the basis for an integrated transportation system towards improving road safety.

Electronic License Plate is an interactive license plate developed to display DMV issued license registration number electronically. The electronic license plate will display information on a screen using electronic paper display (EPD). Electronic Paper Display can display information on the screen without the need for power consumption. It uses power only when information is being updated on the screen. It also uses a wireless communication to transmit information with an external server.

The device can automate the renewal of your vehicle registration without the need to go to the DMV. This means that you can renew your license plate using your online account or mobile app. Once the renewal process is completed, the renewal information will automatically be updated on the electronic license plate using a wireless communication. One other important feature of the electronic license plate is the ability to use it to transmit information during an emergency. For example, if a car is stolen, we can activate a geo location feature on the device. This will cause the device to send out location signals that law enforcement can use to pinpoint the location of the vehicle in real time.

For the city of tomorrow’s initiative, the electronic license plate can improve road safety and enhance our driving experience. If a large number of vehicles within the city are installed with the electronic license plate, most of the vehicles can be connected together through a city-wide communication channel. By being connected to other vehicles on the road, driving can become much safer. The city can collect data from all the electronic license plates on the road within the city and turn it into a predictive analytics system. This can be used to effectively manage traffic lights and control traffic congestions. Although the feature is not currently available, but city and state authorities, can work together to mandate that vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure technologies be built into the license plate.

Vehicle to vehicle technology allows one vehicle to talk to another vehicle. V2V will provide drivers with crucial information when they need it and provide them with a warning of potential crash. The technology provides drivers with 360 degree awareness of similarly equipped vehicles within a range of approximately 300 meters or 984 feet. For example, Intersection Movement Assist application warns drivers when it is unsafe to enter an intersection. This can help avoid collision with a distracted pedestrian. The Do Not Pass application warns drivers when it is not safe to pass a slower moving vehicle.

 Vehicle to Infrastructure technology allows a connected vehicle to talk to other connected infrastructures within it surrounding. One advantages of vehicle to infrastructure is that the connected vehicle can connect with other infrastructure such as traffic lights and pedestrian crossing lights. That of connecting with pedestrian crossing lights can greatly impact the safety of disabled pedestrians such as those who are visually impaired. V2I can help reduce idling and unnecessary stops by communicating with smart traffic signals. Traffic signals broadcast data about their current signal phase and timing, and V2I system inside the license plate use the data to determine speed advice for the driver. The driver could then adjust their vehicle speed to pass the next traffic signal on green or slow down to a stop in the most eco-friendly manner. This can save fuel, reduce emissions, and save the driver money.

Using the electronic license plate to improve the number of connected vehicles on the city’s roads and to manage traffic congestions can improve road safety. This can form the basis for an integrated transportation system for the city. It can be scaled into a long term smart city initiative.

We are a startup company with a team of 4 developers and are based in Birmingham Alabama. We have been working together for the past 7 months. The company is registered as a Delaware C Corporation. We have performed numerous proof of concept of our idea and are currently developing our first prototype. The prototype is being developed in-house by our 4 member team.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

We planned to use the challenge funding towards the development of a custom size display for our electronic license plate. Our electronic license plate will use electronic paper display to electronically display DMV issued registration number and other information on the screen. Electronic paper display is a reflective display that can retain information on the LCD screen without the need for power consumption. The standard size for license plate in the United States is 12 by 6. Electronic paper display screen is not available in size 12 by 6. We have already completed a discussion with a company to design and develop electronic paper display with size 12 by 6 for us. Once this size 12 by 6 display is developed, we will use it to mass produce our electronic license plate. The problem we are currently faced with is funding to pay for the non-recurring engineering fee (NRE) for the production of the size 12 by 6 display.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Our electronic license plate is highly scalable and is sustainable beyond its pilot stage. Once our custom size 12 by 6 electronic paper display is developed, we will produce our second prototype. This prototype will be used for a pilot testing. The pilot testing will involve a partnership with the city in which a specified number of vehicles will be installed with the electronic license plate. The pilot testing will run for a specified number of months. Data will be collected and analyzed to study the viability of the electronic license plate and its improvement to road safety. Once the pilot testing is considered successful, and authorized to be deployed for mass usage, we will proceed into mass production. The company will make money through the sales of the electronic license plate to customers.
