1. Increases reliable access to jobs. The problem that is being solved is a low skilled worker shortage. Lower skilled, lower income workers have access to mobility as a barrier to employment and upward mobility. Specifically workers who could take jobs in bars and restaurants cannot take the available positions because they have no way to get home after their shift ends (since bus service stops before their shift ends).

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

The electric shuttle picks up the rider from the location they specify, perhaps their residence and drops them off at the bus transit center. At the bus transit center they board a high capacity bus that drives at higher speeds, connecting to the transit center in the neighboring community. From there they take another shuttle to their employer. At the end of their work shift they take the reverse voyage back home.

Benjamin Meza-Wilson is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, studying transportation planning. He also participated in interdisciplinary projects for classes in the business school, law school, school of the environment, and engineering. He earned Capstones from the Taubman College of Urban and Regional Planning in Sustainable Urban Reuse and Michigan Law in Connected and Automated Vehicles and Project Management Certificate from the U of M Center For Entrepreneurship.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Give rides cherry picking the highest demand times of day or special events where competitive services are inadequate or more expensive. With the vehicle and a way to interact with customers it becomes like an Uber or Lyft, but stays within a prescribed location, giving short distance rides, like between downtown and the transit center near the expressway.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Gross profit of $3,000 or greater per month per vehicle. Adding vehicles to address increase in the demand for service. The solution is flexible and scalable by adding vehicles, number of seats on vehicles and service hours to best match demand. If more customers want to use the service deployments will increase.
