The HUB Controller smart thermostat has great functionality, connecting to and controlling all residential HVAC systems. Proprietary algorithms reduce HVAC energy consumption with no change in consumer behavior. These algorithms turn off/on equipment during heating/cooling cycles without impacting set temperatures. The In-Home Display (“IHD”) shows consumers their real-time energy spending. Informed consumers make better energy use decisions, and we envisage energy reduction through consumer gamification activities. The IHD allows the energy supplier to message consumers about energy savings promotions, smart tariffs, rebate programs etc. The HUB Controller is a demand side management tool by reducing energy consumption during peak electric system demand.

Value is created for home residents, and especially for low income homes and residents with disabilities, through receiving a free HUB Controller smart thermostat, and realizing significant home utility bill savings over time. The HUB Controller aids people with disabilities to move around more easily as they have remote control over their home HVAC systems, and can be warn of an issues with their HVAC systems without having to be physically at the equipment, which is often located in hard to accesses spaces within the home.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

I have uploaded a straw man of the stakeholders and their contributions and benefits for this demo of deploying 200 HUB Controllers to Indianapolis residents. Long term we would partner with more intermediate customers in Indianapolis, the Cities housing programs, local energy utilities, property management companies, and heating fuel suppliers.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Fully Scaled - you have already scaled your solution and are exploring new use cases

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

Over 5,500 HUB Controllers have been deployed in Ireland since Q1, 2019. We have worked with Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, University College Dublin, and Queens University to report out on the energy saving findings. Hub Controls’ study shows that pilot participants reduced their total consumption by 4600.7 kWh per year on average. The full report is attached above.

  • $100,000

Rough Budget (500 characters)

$15,000 for Installation costs $50,000 for 200 HUB Controllers $15,000 for customer support team and activities $20,000 demo project management and reporting costs

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Key Milestones 1. 200 HUBs manufactured by our 3rd party supplier 2. 200 willing Indianapolis residents identified for the demo with the help of Indy.gov 3. 200 HUB Controllers deployed using locally qualified HVAC technicians 4. Customer Support team and processes put in place by HUB Controls to answer any queries end users have - typically get a few queries after initial install 5. Gather real time data and use third party such as a university to verify benefits of HUB Controller for residents with disabilities and low income

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Success would be measured by producing a similar report to the one produced for the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. It would focus on the benefits of the deployment of the HUB Controller as it relates to the objectives the Ford Mobility City: One Challenge.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

HUB Controls won New York State Energy Research and Development Authority "76 West Award" in late 2018 https://www.irishtimes.com/business/innovation/dublin-based-firm-nets-500-000-after-winning-clean-tech-competition-in-us-1.3658704 SInce then HUB Controls have received $500,000 in cash from NYSERDA, opened up an office in New York State, and are now rolling out a sales pipeline in the US. HUB Controls are also backed by Exergy Capital Management and secured £2.5 million in Q4 of 2018.
