One can bicycle from Madison Avenue on Shelby Street all the way into downtown using existing bike lanes and trails. One can ride south from Thompson Road on Madison Avenue bike lanes all the way to the county line. The half mile on Madison that spans I-465 is scary enough to prevent riders from attempting the journey. Connecting these two pieces of existing infrastructure opens the entire city to southside bicycle riders, including the southernmost station of the Red Line at the University of Indianapolis.
