Build Connections between Existing Infrastructure

Many of our bike facilities can be connected with a little over a half mile of additional infrastructure.

In many places around the city, bicycle infrastructure has gaps of less than a mile. Connecting these gaps will make biking more viable as a transportation option. This project will acquire easy to install temporary bike facilities to use to demonstrate the impact of making these permanent connections. The first connection is Shelby Street to Madison Avenue. One can bicycle from Madison Avenue on Shelby Street all the way into downtown using existing bike lanes and trails. One can ride south from Thompson Road on Madison Avenue bike lanes all the way to the county line. The half mile on Madison that spans I-465 is scary enough to prevent riders from attempting the journey. Connecting these two pieces of existing infrastructure opens the entire city to southside bicycle riders, including the southernmost station of the Red Line at the University of Indianapolis.

Bicycle riders on the southside have no low stress routes into downtown. This route is easy to complete, even if better routes are possible. More people will ride into the city for work, education, healthcare, and recreation.

Rough Budget (500 characters)

Purchase and install DezignLine BikeRail products to build separated bike lanes on both sides of Madison over the I-465 bridge and install a treatment for the Shelby Street/Madison Avenue intersection.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Prior to installation, we will conduct bike counts on the Madison Avenue bridge over 465. Using the DezignLine products, we will build temporary separated bike lanes on Madison Avenue. We will conduct another bike count on the bridge after three, six, and nine months. If the counts prove success, we will work to make these permanent facilities and find another location to deploy the temporary equipment.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Success will be determined by significantly increased cycling over the 465 bridge. The goal is to create permanent separated infrastructure upon success and to use the temporary equipment to tackle another needed connection in the city.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

The plan will be sustained by permanent infrastructure installation. Bike Indianapolis will work with the city and private donors to identify money for permanent installation. The temporary equipment will then be moved to another location where the gap closing can be established and measured for a permanent solution.

Hi Damon Richards , I'm Jasmine one of the online facilitators for the challenge this year. I know that biking is becoming a more normalized mode of transportation, so thank you for bring the concerns of a biker to the challenge. With this idea, it seems pretty specific. Do you think there are other areas in the city that might benefit from this concept? Also do you think time of day/ amount of traffic increases the level of concern for traveling across 465?

Jasmine, the proposal is specific because it’s a pilot. The equipment used for this is portable and will be moved to another network gap when this section becomes permanent. The Indianapolis bicycle network is littered with missing segments that prevent people from connecting to the places they need to go.
