Automated ride-sharing

We want to provide an app which would automate ride-sharing, with an experience similar to hitchhiking.

Our solution is an app, with complex backend system, which helps you automate the process of ride-sharing. The basic idea is that the driver would not need to do extra detours, just stop along the way to pick and drop passengers.

This would help to increase the occupancy of vehicles, and reduce the need to drive a car yourself, since the probability to get to your destination fast enough is very high.

It is also a very useful way to complement other transport means to save the "last-mile" problem.

The system will probably include incentives, so the passenger will need to pay something, and the driver will receive it, but it will still be much cheaper than other means of transport.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

There are 2 groups of users: - drivers, which have available space in the vehicle, and are willing to receive some incentive (possibly money) while doing their travel; - passengers, which are willing to share a ride, and possibly even wait some time, in return for a very cheap ride. Both would use the app and input origin and destination. The backend system would propose a match for them, and if they confirm, let the driver know where to pick and drop the passenger along the route.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

We have developed the idea at a hackaton and got awarded for it. We have also discussed with several companies which are willing to participate in the roll-out when the system gets developed. We have also developed the backend simulator and confirmed that the benefits of such a system would be significant - travel times much lower than with public transport, even with low density of drivers.

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

We are a startup, working on transport optimization.

Size of your team or organization

  • 2-10

Funding Request

  • $75,000

Rough Budget (500 characters)

45,000 for developing the app 25,000 for further developing the backend 5,000 for marketing

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

The best way to pilot it would be in a limited region, probably area around one of city arterial roads or a company with many employees, which would use the app for ride-sharing when commuting to and from work. The company or municipality could also offer some kind of incentive to the drivers, so that it may initially even be free for the passengers, to ease the adoption. Our company is already involved in the development of some related products, so the backend is partially funded by us. However, we need to creat an app, which would be user-friendly.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

The best measure is the number of passengers per trip, and the percentage of the shared length regarding to the whole trip.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

We intend to take a fee on the payment of the shared rides. We are investigating other models, but this is the most straight-forward.
