Improving the comfort level of mobility through the city.

I'm looking at a mobile app in video game style. The goal of the app is to improve the users comfort level with traveling through the city.

I'm envisioning a game app that teaches the user about the city.  The user would increase their comfort level traveling through the city and visiting businesses and attractions.

The app would have an accurate map of the city with the ability to virtually travel through the city correctly using the roads and infrastructure. Travel options would include travel by car, bike, bus, and walking.

By car the user could virtually visit and drive around the city and just look around.   The user could also pick a destination and practice getting there.  The user would pick a destination such as a museum and practice choosing the roads to get where they are going.  Once at their destination they would see parking options and other destinations nearby such as restaurants and gas stations.

The user could also start on foot at any spot and see how far/long you need to walk.  You could also practice choosing the right bus and gain an understanding of how to get around.

The user could also choose bike paths and bike friendly parts of the city.

With the virtual tour in a game practice situation the user could play until they are comfortable heading into an unknown area.  It would be like you had been there before the first time you set out.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

People like me would use the app. There have been times when I hear about a concert at VanAndle or an event at the museum. My first thought is that I'd like to go. My next thoughts are about driving on busy, unknown roads. I become concerned about parking and how far I'd need to walk. I end up not going. An app like this would change my comfort level when visiting the city. I would choose to visit more often.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

It's just me and an idea. I have no idea what to do with it.

Size of your team or organization

  • I am submitting as an individual

Funding Request

  • No funding is required

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

It's just me and an idea. I say I dont need funding because I dont have experience taking action on an idea this way.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

I guess we would let people try the game and check back with users. If users make trips into the city that they would not have made before using the app it would be successful.

Hi Kathy: I think your proposal has potential. Lots of apps have been proposed on the forum. But, I haven't seen any gamified apps. Can you add a photo to the proposal? Do you want to ask for some money to bring the idea to life? If you don't want to implement it, you could pull together a small team to lead the effort and contract with graphic designers and app developers. The deadline for editing proposals is Monday, October 1 at 4 pm.
