GENIUS IDEAS ARE BORN ON COCKTAIL NAPKINS

Bars and Resturants serve everyone a napkin & when something is written on a napkin it can start a conversation. Let's start conversations.

Problem

Getting the message out.

This challenge encourages us to consider how to publicize the new transportation projects being deployed by the City. What innovative and accessible tools would help travelers and residents easily find their way and comfortably move around town?

 Solution

Put messages on a cocktail napkin with a tease of information and prompt people to go to websites or apps for more information.

Cocktail Napkins? Why not!
Cocktail Napkins would reach an enormously diverse crowd that can share the information when it is called to mind in conversations that may occur in the workplace or home environments.

Example 1

You go to the bar, and receive a napkin that says" biking to work can pay for your coffee ..check us out  mygrcitypoints.com"..

Interesting, you think.  You check it out by going to the website.

You find it interesting and share it with others.

1 napkin can start a conversation.

Example 2

You are from out of town and are here for a wedding. You plan to be here for the whole weekend. You are having a beer at one of the many breweries downtown grand rapids. The cocktail napkin says something that catches your attention.. Downtown shuttles are free .. check us out at www... You take a picture of your napkin and you share it with others at the wedding.

One napkin can reach many. While the napkin isn't a high tech option, it can be used to point to one.

I believe this could be accomplished for less than 5K and the city could sustain it with their advertising budget AND Grand Rapids would be marketing to their actual customer - those that live, work and play in the downtown area.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

All bars an restaurant would be given napkins or the graphics to have printed - funding could come from the mobility departments budget

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

Just my idea, but I can see the Mobility Department, as well a graphic artist working on a team.

Size of your team or organization

  • 2-10

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Website traffic as well as increased use of services

The City of Grand Rapids pays for advertising, so why not napkins? I think giving the napkins free or at low cost to bars and restaurants could be an effective way to advertise the things you mentioned, but also things such as bike or pedestrian safety. You can get a whole lot of napkins for the price of a billboard, and people would see the napkins when they're sitting in one place, most likely with a smart phone in hand.
