Driving in downtown Grand Rapids can challenging. There are one-way streets, an abundance of vehicle traffic, and so many fabulous places to visit. Additionally, Rideshare drivers are trying their best to execute drop-offs and pick-ups at the bars and restaurants. Since there is so little street parking in the areas listed above what happens is the driver stops and picks up in the middle of the street. Drivers ultimately hamper traffic, creating a mobility issue and putting everyone at risk as passengers dodge street traffic.

So what if we designated an area near each one of these challenging areas that are listed above be utilized for drop off and pick up. A designated area would be an inexpensive solution that would improve mobility and safety for drivers and pedestrians.

What would it take?

A sign for each area

A few public service announcements

Bar napkins with a printed reminder to go to the designated area for pick up

A seriously easy fix that would help promote mobility and safety - that could probably be done for less than $10,000 dollars.

"Paul has asked the question ' what can be done to help out the Bridge Street Congestion' in a few of his posts. As someone who drives in the downtown area, I completely understand Pauls concern. I believe though, that other areas of downtown have similar issues and could be considered for the same solution. Including, Ionia Street -GRBC Block & Tavern on the Square Area, Commerce-Stella's/PyramidArea, Bridge Street-Anchor Bar Area, Van Andel Arena, The Bob, Fulton Street- Back 40/San Chez"

Tom Bulten  I too have driven for Uber and fully understand the frustrations on the drivers' side as well as the passengers' side. My suggestion targets a local issue that I noticed. With that said another Proposal targets another issue -log rides that could be split between drivers. I think that the idea could be pulled into one proposal - any idea of how the other individual feels about this?
