A tree for every bus stop

I'd like to see a tree at every bus stop.

I propose to pay for a tree to be planted by each bus stop, then pay business owners and residents who have a tree planted in front of their property a stipend for keeping the tree alive. These people can be informed about proper tree care and watering, then take responsibility for the tree. The trees could be checked each year, and a check issued if the tree is still alive, for a year or two. The City of Grand Rapids often plants trees, but many die from lack of care.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

This solution benefits those who wait at bus stops on hot days. It benefits the city as a whole, as an environmental and beautification effort, even for those who do not ride the bus.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Tell us about your team or organization (500 characters)

  • I am submitting as an individual

Funding Request

  • $100,000

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Were trees planted by bus stops? Were they kept alive? Are bus riders enjoying a more pleasant wait at their bus stops?

Thanks for the proposal, Laura! --Specific, doable, and it builds on the conversation that you started in the "Explore" phase. We're approaching the closure of the "Propose" phase on Monday (October 1 at 4 pm). It would be great if you could add a photo and a few more details to the proposal. Any idea how many bus stops exist in the system and how many lack trees?
