The solution is a web based platform that allows the community to curate information about the neighbourhood on an interactive map.

The map is accessible through the computer and mobile phone.

There is no limit to the information able to add to the map. The information and graphics can be adjusted to include versions for vision impaired.

There can be information about local events, stores, buses, train, safe bike paths, access guides for handicaped etc.

Residents, workers and visitors all alike will benefit from the currated interactive map as it hold relevant information which can be selected and filtered out for easy digestion.

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

We have learnt that displaying information on an interactive map is very powerful and appreciated. We have tested the idea and deployed it at various sport events an now looking at developing the curation part of the underluying platform where the administrator/organisers/community them self add and edit the information.

We are a small product development team focused on bringing new user experiences to everyday situations leveraging technology. We have two platforms under commercialization, a mobility platform focused on urban traffic to optimize transports and delivery services, and a sports management platform to plan and execute large scale events like marathons. Rough Budget (500 characters)

$50,000 to develop the curation part of the platform $10,000 to travel and live in Detroit for the duration of the project $20,000 to engage with the local community and currate information $20,000 to work with local development team to build curration platform and design services locally to interact and engage with the community.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

We would seak out an find the local information that is relevant to add to a first version of the interactive map. At the same time we would specify and build the curration service to the existing map platform. Then we would let key players currate information and experiment on letting the community add and maintain information that should be available.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

We would measure the sucess by the volume of interaction of the intaractive map service. Users/day. We would also intervju the community to try to understand if the interactive map has improved information tansperancy and lifted the overall accessability and experience in and of the community. The success should be meassured by evaluation what key targets see benefits of the interactive map: residents, workers, visitors.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

We plan to charge the community a fee for hoasting the web service. As the community hopefully will currate the information we see that this is a great showcase to commercialize the interactive map service and therfore see that the hoasting costs will be low. We intend to explore sources of potential revenue during the project.

jonas bohman  Thank you for sharing this proposal! It sounds like this platform would help people navigate the many different transportation options as well as community events, stores, attractions, etc. Public transportation in Detroit in known for being difficult to navigate, so this would definitely help! This map would be available on personal electronic devices. Would it also be displayed for the public in areas throughout the city? What type of information would you hope that people share through the curation capability?

If there are means of displaying and interacting with the map in public areas already, it could be displayed on these devices. The map has a responsive design meaning it will adapt the layout based on screen size and resolution. So, it can be used on mobile, computer, or digital signs in public areas.

If public signs/devices (stationary digital screens with touch interface) aren’t available in the area right now, maybe this should be part of the project. Because there may be a lack of mobile users as per in the challenge description, so would make sense to explore engagement and interaction when placed in public areas.

For the type of information I'd hope to be curated and shared other than what you already mentioned: Providing the opportunity to the community to curate data, I would hope that other type of information will be displayed than we can imagine today. That is information needs that we are not able to conceive because we don't understand other people’s struggles. As example: Maybe wheelchair friendly pathways will be curated, or a graphical version that cater for visually impaired. It may be information about local reconstruction and its time schedule/progress. And what it will look like when ready.

Or it may be information that is more personal and better communicates the “life” in the neighborhood. Such information that does not appear today on global map solutions as they have standard format and general information.

I believe an important part of the project is to explore the local community to identify and understand various stakeholders, and have them engage in the project. So that we can capture the needs we can't foresee. And by tracking interaction with the map/information (anonymously) we will also have insight in what actually engages people, and what is important in the local context. This so that information can be lifted up and be organized and displayed in a more interesting and consumable manner.

For displaying information throughout the city: I think there is no problem to allow curation to go beyond the Central Station Impact Area. To allow further engagement throughout the city. And I believe the Impact Area is a good start to spark a city wide initiative.
