Automating Trash Pickup Schedules to Reduce Traffic, Overflowing Trash Bins & Pollution

Unfortunately, trash bins are picked up based on static collection schedules, which means bins are emptied when they too or too late causing operational inefficiency. When too late, overflowing containers lead to illegal dumping following additional cleaning and collection costs. Too early, Containers are empty at the time of pickup wasting time, resources and money.

We have built a state-of-the-art IoT fill-level device, which can measure the fill-level of any type of trash in any type bin and 3D map the waste volume. This unique device has 10+ years of battery lifetime, which is quite revolutionary for its kind - and earns itself back after just 3 months of the subscription cost. The future of waste collection is going to be based on the data from these devices, no technology yet supports such advanced routing planning engine, which is what we are building. By embedding machine learning into the route planning we can automate trash pickups completely and remove all the hassles relating to inefficient emptyings of empty bins and overflowing disasters.

WasteHero devices monitor activity, including bin fullness, temperature and fill rates, to identify waste generation patterns. Data from bins are collected on the company's web-based platform, which produces real-time analysis for city officials to visualize the fullness of every trash bin simultaneously and deploy haulers only when needed.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

We plan to deploy the IoT devices in the city and start collecting the data over a 3-6 month period. While we are doing that, we can start analyzing the potential impact going from pilot to scale the city would gain from starting to pick up the trash bins based on the sensor measurements. We can introduce the findings to city officials and local waste management companies. The funding will fund the IoT devices, the installation, and the software to the city.

-Number of trash vehicles reduced in the area - Number of Emptying's reduced - The number of overflowing containers reduced - Cost reduced - Emission reduced - Optimize the bin placement in the city

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

The device has a 10 years battery lifetime and will sustain in the trash bins. As the city starts to pick up the trash based on the measurements, we estimate 30-40% annual savings amongst a few benefits to the city. Many cities are looking at this, including San Francisco and London. This is a great way for the city of Detroit to assess the solution and potentially benefit greatly from optimizing mobility by running waste management more smartly, which can generate sufficient revenues.
