This contribution is about bridging the gap that the freeway has created, with potential extension further into and out of the city.

This idea was derived during my masters thesis research for my degree in architecture. The idea is to cap the area over I-75, reinstating the old street grid as well as adding new programming for the newly created space. My proposal includes expanded retail space, along with housing and parking to better serve the area as well as an expanse of green space to complete the cap between the retail corridor along Michigan Avenue and the residential area north of I-75 in Corktown. Another further idea is to create a subway network using the current freeway loops in the city to expand upon our transportation options already in existence.

How will your solution benefit residents, workers, or visitors in the Michigan Central Station impact area? (1,000 characters)

This solution will benefit residents who use it to more safely cross the freeway, it also adds to the value of life creating retail and green space. For workers it will benefit the need for parking in the area, enhance their day to day while at work by creating the out door and retail space as well, and visitors will feel a similar impact.

Describe your solution's stage of development

  • Initial Design - you are still exploring the idea and have not tested it with users

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

I have presented the overall thesis to many people and the greatest feedback I received was to speak with residents and users of the current space as it lies to gather a better understanding of their specific needs.

Rough Budget (500 characters)

This money would be spent on community meetings to shape a better understanding of the areas wants and needs. The overall project has a large budget and is multi-faceted but is important to put on the table.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Piloting this idea would be in the form of community meetings, utilizing the design thinking process to ideate it to its finest form overall-creating something that is user appreciated, and successful in the end.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Measuring success in the space would be tracked by number of users daily as well as the dollar amount spent in the area and on-site after completion.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

Using the retail spaces to contribute to the maintenance fees/upkeep of the area is one method that other cities who have capped their freeways use frequently.
