In the United States, more than 50,000 schools are without a bus system. In Austin, there are about 65 magnet and charter schools with no or limited bussing.  Especially in single-parent and working-parent households, families are struggling to drive their kids to and from school as it often interferes with parents’ own work schedules. Attending after-school activities most often depends on parents being able to drive their kids to and from those activities; many low-income families, especially in areas underserved by the public METRO busses, are not able to have their kids attend after-school activities.

Transportation difficulties affect school attendance.

GoKid aims to bring its family mobility solution to Austin, Texas to help lower-income and at-risk students and their families improve school attendance and lower tardiness. We also want to improve safety and security. We can empower individuals, schools, communities, and organizations to collaborate in order to radically improve Austins’ mobility. We see GoKid as the tech tool of choice for schools with little or no busing.

GoKid will offer the full technology solution to up to 15 schools in low-income neighborhoods as well as up to 5 sports and community centers in Austin, TX, helping parents organize their carpools; the grant will support this initiative by providing us the go-to-market funds which will enable us to fund school pilots, hire a local area sales and smart city representative  and initiate additional partnerships with after-school activities and leagues.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Our pilot will demonstrate that by implementing a mobility solution for families, school attendance will increase and tardiness will decrease. We also want to measure that we can grant access to after-school activities and sports for families in disadvantaged circumstances. We offer GoKid to parents in Austin, TX through schools and other organizations we see the immediate and obvious benefits for students: Students will get to school reliably and on time even if their own parents are unable to drive - increasing attendance and cutting down on tardiness as carpooling opens up options to attend activities that may otherwise have been out of reach - e.g. sports leagues, after-school activities It will also benefit parents who have difficulty transporting their children to school. They will save time, save money, and will be able to create a community that will ultimately improve their quality of life. Schools benefit as the traffic in pick-up and drop off lines will decrease.

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

500,000 trips have been scheduled on GoKid; we are live across schools in the US and have been awarded a regional demonstration grant in Michigan that we are currently implementing. We are part of the first ION Smart City Houston cohort with a demonstration project to be announced in December. The Mayor of Houston has supported our regional roll out and we have been introduced to larger charter school networks that also operate in Austin, TX.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

As a technology company, we are driven by setting pilot goals and measuring results using the OKR system (Objectives and Key Results). We would set specific goals and measure success as follows: -Number of schools launched Goal: 15 - a success rate of 90% launched is a minimum - Number of families that accepted the registration - Goal 30% - Percentage of activated families in year 1: minimum 10% with 20 trips per active user - Total Amount of times save (calculated by # of activated families in participating schools) - Total amount of CO2 saved (as above * trip length) - Percentage of school attendance changed Using schools data as the base - define goals with schools Additional stretch goals: find partners in Austin to support the program; e.g. corporates to integrate our solution into their corporate employee benefits program. Include carpooling for families in Austins' mobility plan. Work on adapting our current family carpool solution for commuters in Austin.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

GoKid has over 500,000 carpools created with an expected revenue of $ 200k in 2019. The long-term business viability is the true reason why this project is unique. We are live across schools in the US with pricing ranging from $ 3999 - 7999 annually. The opportunities to work with low-income schools and communities are concrete and feasible; future funding opportunities include Title 1 grant usage underfunded school communities, city, and corporate support. Develop commuter solution.
