Safe Intersection

We would like to create a stoplight that is aware of its surroundings to create safer intersections for cars, cyclist, and pedestrians

Using Alternative transport mobility modes such as bicycle, skateboard, scooters, powered skates, and hoverboards is much more demanding than using an automobile and by assisting with intersection safety and rider relevant information. This project will use sensor supported AI so cars, pedestrians and alternative mobility users can have a better understanding of their surroundings and therefore create a safe intersection.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Many accidents happen when a car is turning right on street intersections and the driver does not see a cyclist going straight on the bike lane. Our solution will try to avoid accidents that can be picked up by technology and alert users of what is happening in their surroundings. As shown in the video, as the cyclist approaches the interaction he is picked up by the sensor and alerts the car driver of the proximity of the cyclist.

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

We first utilized a sonic sensor that can detect an object up to 13ft. The sensor would light up depending on how close you are to it. After the first round we realized that the project needed to integrate a wide spectrum of technologies, sensing, image processing, image recognition, AI training, communicating with traffic control systems, aggregating various emergency, public information systems, signage systems and unknown, unknowns.

The first objective would be to build a functional prototype, including hardware and software development.

We would like to build a team with the technical capabilities to build the hardware necessary and also to program the software.

Taking the sensor to the streets and showing that it is capable of recognizing a cyclist from a car driver would suffice to prove the concept.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

If the pilot is successful a business plan could be developed to make a product out of the prototype.
