In the past five years, a high number of people have lost their lives in flooding events in Texas, often when operating a vehicle. Recent examples include multiple casualties in September 2019 in the Houston-Beaumont area, though this is a recurring problem in most areas of Texas, the USA and the world. 

An overwhelming majority of these cases are due to human error (misjudging vehicle abilities to cross a flooded road), or due to the lack of information (for example during high rain, low visibility or night conditions). Our sensors can be used to track flooding events in cities and surrounding high risk areas. This information can be displayed the car infotainment system as a flood area, and used to warn users in real time. It can also be used to automatically reroute the car around the dangerous areas. Furthermore, the connected-vehicle data can be used to track the car position in case of non-compliance, and connect to the user to recommend them to stop.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

The end users of this system will be the drivers and car occupants. The system will be inactive most of the time, except when a flood is detected. At this point, the system will become active, graying out the unavailable roads (that are too dangerous) from the navigation map, and automatically rerouting the vehicle in a safe path, according to the flood information provided by the Sadeem sensors to the infotainment system. The user will thus not see this safety system for most of their driving time, though it may save their life when a flood occurs.

Insights from previous testing (500 characters)

We have tested our sensors for more than 4 years of accumulated time, and obtained accurate flooding data for years of consecutive operation. From previous testing we placed a very strong emphasis on reliability and dependability, for this safety system. We also placed a strong emphasis on cost, given the need to scale this system to all risky areas.

Sadeem International Company is a spinout startup from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). It started in 2011 as a research group of four multinational co-founders with a combination of engineering background; Traffic monitoring, Wireless sensor networks, Networks Communication, Machine Learning, and Systems Engineering. Sadeem currently consists of 12 full time employees (from 7 countries) with a variety of disciplines and expertise.

Rough budget (500 characters)

Our rough budget is as follows: -$20K cost and installation of several flood sensors around unsafe areas in Austin -$10K system integration -$20K prototype app development cost for vehicle navigation system

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

In the pilot phase, we envision to deploy some sensors around Austin. These sensors have been extensively tested earlier. Hence our objective is to integrate their data with a visualizer that displays vehicle position data, so that the position of vehicles can be tracked with respect to the flooded areas. Time permitting, we would like to interface the system with the car navigation system, through the dynamic modification of link costs in the routing algorithm (requires the support of Ford), to prevent routes that would go through identified flooded areas.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

The pilot can be validated by simulating some flooding close to a sensor, and analyzing the system response (route change, map display and driver response).

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

While the system itself will not generate revenue in itself, it can be funded by either: - laws that mandate such a safety system inside new vehicles, that would require some collaborations between vehicle manufacturers and DOTs - competitive advantage of providing this information to the user, as part of connected vehicles service packages paid by the user. The revenue from the subscription to connected vehicles service packages would pay for new sensors and for maintenance.
