Predicting Oil and Gas Pipeline Leaks Before they Happen

The Problem

More than $30 billion of revenue is lost annually due to pipeline leaks, yet this substantial loss does not even begin to cover the losses for litigation, fines, and cleanup fees. The real victim, however, is the countless acres of land and water that is made subject to these travesties. In addition, it is estimated that 70% of extremist funding comes from black market oil and gas theft. By solving this problem, not only can we save our customers millions, we can help protect the environment, and even help defund terror.

The Solution

Our solution set consists of two major components:

  1. Internet of Things (IoT) Device: Leveraging the recent upgrades in microprocessing technology, we are able to create advanced IoT devices that measure the most important variables in pipeline longevity. Calling it our “Seven Factor Analysis”, we collect internal density, audio, pressure, vibration and impact, temperature, geo positioning, and corrosion rates. This patented technology system mounts externally from the pipeline so that no tapping is necessary as we have found that invasive monitoring systems are responsible for 2.8% of pipeline leaks.

  2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Modules: Once the data collected by the IoT device, it is submitted, via 4GLTE networks, to a cloud-computing neural network where it is analyzed time and time again to allow the data speak. Trend analysis, normalization patterns, deviations, and much more are all assessed and weighed. Ratings are given for the health status of the pipeline based on the data observed. Should an immediate hazard be detected by the AI, updates are posted to the user’s Graphic UserInterface (GUI) as well as text messages and email alerts are sent.

The Market Size

With thousands of miles of pipeline being added to the network of more than 2.6 million miles already in operation in America, the market is growing substantially. In 2015, the pipeline monitoring industry was valued at $4.13 Billion; By 2026, it is expected to grow to $8.72 Billion (7.1% CAGR). With our innovation and approach being disruptive to our competition, we hope to capture 5% of this underdeveloped market in just five years.

Our mission isn't just to save the oil and gas operators money, but help protect the environment, defund terror overseas, and help to alleviate devastating costs of energy that Americans have to face every day.

Describe who will use your solution (1,000 characters)

Oil and gas operators will be the purchasers of our systems at a massive cost reductions to them compared to our competitors. The operator then installs our hardware through a three-step process, externally from the pipeline. The data is then fed to the customer, wirelessly, with our analytics packages working to see hazards ahead of time. This means that the pipeline operator will be better equipped to promise the local communities with cleaner air, water, and land, lower energy costs, and a safer community.

With partnering with one of the largest pipeline operators in the United States, we learned just how excited the industry is to use our product. We had a painful insight that our battery pack had to be changed, but since the in-field battery failures, we have never had a device fail in over 18 months of deployment. We also have yet to lose a customer since we began operating!

We typically charge per month, per mile of pipeline analyzed by mIQroTech. With this area having such a massive need for our solution, we are willing to offer our services at-cost during the pilot period. $25,000 for hardware (50 devices) $75,000 for data storage and network communications.

During the pilot, our devices will be able to spot hazards ahead of time. Partnering with local and state government representatives in order to combat these threats, protecting the community, will be paramount. We also aim to partner with other selected City of Tomorrow creations in order to help build up the local startup ecosystem.

Our key metics would be as follows: - Measuring the number of deployed. - Staying on budget. - Number of reported incidents versus the number of actual incidents. - Amount of contaminants reduced from entering the populous. - The partnerships we form with the local communities.

Sustainability Plan (500 characters)

Our business model is subscription-based enabling the margins that are very sustainable. The required subscription allows access to the data, the GUI, and alerts, as well as provides the user the necessary devices for their pipeline. Pricing for the subscription is $250 per mile of pipeline analyzed, monthly. With tens of thousands of miles of pipeline operators currently on Letter of Intent, we also have deployed successfully over several hundred miles. All of this supports our longterm growth.
