There is an emerging market for image sensors for autonomous vehicle decision-system applications. Visible, infrared and multispectral images from multiple cameras are now being actively developed for operating unmanned or autonomous vehicles. Using these technologies allows the display of scene information that is not normally seen by the unaided human eye. They could be embedded in autonomous vehicles in order to provide enhanced safety through additional awareness.

Stratio, Inc. (Stratio)’s short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) sensor is delivered at a fraction of the cost and in a compact package to open a new low cost, high volume SWIR market. We are providing BeyonSense®, the world’s first portable, affordable, and smartphone-compatible SWIR camera ranging from 400 to 1600nm.

 As a unique and affordable solution to improve mobility, we expect that BeyonSense® will be successfully deployed into the autonomous vehicle market enabling cost-effective, high-resolution image data at night and under most weather conditions. We also anticipate that our SWIR camera will contribute to improving vehicle reliability and safety. As an example, it can be employed to prevent riding in the rain, in particular, which is dangerous because it obscures the driver's eyesight. Providing those drivers with additional visual information, BeyonSense® will allow them to safely control the vehicles in such complex or unpredictable environment.

It is expected that autonomous vehicles become mainstream in the near future thus, major industry-leading automobile companies have started to invest in SWIR imaging technology as SWIR camera is able to enhance safety for drivers/autonomous driving functions through its capacity to penetrate haze such as fog, dust, and smoke. Our SWIR imaging sensor can be employed for all kinds of vehicles making SWIR cameras affordable. Enhanced driving safety will help people physically and emotionally feel more comfortable with their journeys boosting road safety significantly.

Stratio has launched LinkSquare®, the world’s first portable spectrometer processing visible and Infrared, in 2017 to help customers identify materials and have since partnered with private and public institutions to create a range of life-enhancing applications. LinkSquare® is designed for layperson use through significant innovation in performance, cost, and size, which inspired the needs of SWIR technology as an accessible, affordable, and reliable way to make lives better.

Stratio is a global team of >25 full-timers. CEO and Co-founder, Jae Hyung Lee, is a Stanford EE Ph.D., and Stratio’s core team includes two other Stanford EE PhDs, and a Stanford MBA. Our small team is nonetheless versatile and collectively make up all the skill sets we need from hardware & software engineering, business, and design.

First, we plan to invest US$50,000 in product development as BeyonSense®-Pre (11x8 resolution) should be performed field tests and demonstrate its capacity and feasibility. We will also allocate enough funding (>US$10,000) to expedite the semi-mass production (>500 unites) process of the SWIR camera as well as perform aggressive sales & marketing to deploy a large volume of BeyonSense® units.

Describe how you would pilot your idea (1000 characters)

Stratio’s goal of this challenge is to contribute to enhanced driving safety and community benefits. For the first step, we plan to develop and test a low-resolution SWIR camera (11×8 resolution) in order to show the potential of being used in the night vision and anti-fog vision for vehicles/autonomous vehicles. Additionally, we plan to offer a wide range of applications using hyperspectral imaging in the SWIR range that can be successfully utilized in various fields such as defense, life science, remote sensing, and optical sorting sectors. After the pilot phase, Stratio expects to deliver BeyonSense® as a final product (128x128 resolution) to help make driving safer and benefit communities providing a unique, affordable and direct SWIR solution to autonomous vehicle development.

Describe how you would measure the success of your pilot (1000 characters)

Stratio plans to complete BeyonSense®, the current prototype, to ship by 4Q 2019. The 1st generation BeyonSense®-Pre we plan to sell at below US$500 and a custom solution will be offered at extra cost. Once we finalize our product specification, we will focus on sales and marketing to generate sustainable revenue. Our goal is to ship >500 BeyonSense®-Pre units by 4Q 2020. Running a pilot program will help improve product specifications to ensure that BeyonSense® can be deployed into the autonomous vehicle market.

Our potential partners in the U.S. and in Europe include sensor manufacturers seeking SWIR solutions suitable for high-volume, lower-end applications to address the increasing needs in the SWIR market, as well as those who would like to develop unique industry-specific products, such as food sorters, quality control systems, and a variety of OEMs in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, healthcare and security industries.
